How Puurs-Sint-Amands Was Formed
The Flemish Government is the local government for the region where Puurs-Sint-Amands is located. This government encourages smaller towns to join together. They offer help and support if towns decide to merge.
On September 18, 2017, the town councils of Puurs and Sint-Amands agreed that they wanted to merge. They gave their final approval on November 20, 2017. The Flemish Government then officially approved this merger on May 4, 2018. This decision, called a "decree," meant that Puurs and Sint-Amands would become one town starting on January 1, 2019.
Before they merged, on January 1, 2018, Puurs had about 17,452 people living there. Sint-Amands had about 8,480 people. When they joined, their populations combined to form the new town of Puurs-Sint-Amands.
