A Look at Sint-Amands History

Sint-Amands has been a populated area for a very long time. People lived here even during the time of the Roman Empire. We know this because Roman objects have been found in the area.

Early Records of Sint-Amands

The first time Sint-Amands was written about was in the year 822. This was in a document from Louis the Pious, who was a king at that time. He was the son of the famous Charlemagne. Sint-Amands was an important place in the Baasrode region. This region was given as a gift to the Saint-Amand Abbey.

How Sint-Amands Grew

In the 11th century, the Baasrode region split into three parts: Baasrode, Sint-Amands, and Mariekerke. During this time, a large part of the land along the Scheldt river became part of the Flanders region. Sint-Amands then became its own special area, almost like a small kingdom.

Church History in Sint-Amands

The first church in Sint-Amands was mentioned in records from 1281. It was part of the diocese of Kamerijk. Later, it joined the diocese of Mechelen in 1559. Then, in 1600, it moved to the diocese of Ghent. Finally, in 1801, it returned to the diocese of Mechelen.

Sint-Amands Industry and Trade

For a long time, until the 1800s, Sint-Amands was mostly a farming town. There were some big farms, but most of the land was divided into smaller ones.

Before a canal was built to Brussels, Sint-Amands was a very busy place for shipping. Many barges traveled through the town on their way to cities like Brussels, Mechelen, Antwerp, Dendermonde, and Temse.
