Queralbs is a small village, also called a municipality, located in the Pyrenees mountains of Catalonia, Spain. It's part of the Ripollès area in the province of Girona. The village is nestled among tall peaks like Puigmal (2909 meters), Infern (2896 meters), and Noufonts (2864 meters).

Queralbs is known for its beautiful mountain scenery. The local economy mainly relies on tourism and making electricity from water, which is called hydroelectricity. A famous place here is the Virgin of Nuria shrine, located in Vall de Núria. This shrine has an old Romanesque image of "la Mare de Déu de Núria." You can reach the shrine and the village by a special train called the Vall de Núria Rack Railway, which starts from Ribes de Freser. There's also a road to Ribes de Freser, which is about 7 kilometers away, and it leads to a ski resort.

A Glimpse into History

The old Romanesque Church in Queralbs

Queralbs has a very long history! The first time Queralbs was mentioned in official records was in 836. This was during the dedication of a church in the Urgell Diocese. Because of this long history, the town's motto is "poble mil·lenari," which means "millennial town." The village's beautiful Romanesque church, dedicated to Saint James, was built even later, around the end of the tenth century.

Earthquakes in the Past

Queralbs is located near an active fault system called Amer-Brugent. A fault is like a crack in the Earth's crust where rocks move past each other. In 1428, a very strong earthquake, known as the Catalan earthquake of 1428, completely destroyed Queralbs. The center of this earthquake was in a nearby town called Camprodon.
