The Río Matilde is a short river located in the city of Ponce, Puerto Rico. It is formed when two other rivers, the Rio Pastillo and the Rio Canas, join together. Río Matilde is one of 14 rivers found in the Ponce area. It starts at a very low elevation of just 15 feet (about 4.6 meters) above sea level. This makes it the lowest starting point of any river in the municipality.
Where Does It Start?
Río Matilde is not just a part of another river. It actually begins when the Río Pastillo and Río Canas rivers meet. The Río Pastillo flows from the east, and the Río Canas flows from the northwest. They come together in an area called Barrio Canas in Ponce. This meeting point is just west of a neighborhood called Urbanizacion Rio Canas and north of PR-2.
How Long Is It?
Río Matilde is the shortest river in the municipality of Ponce. It is about 1.7 kilometers (or 1.1 miles) long. The river flows into the Caribbean Sea near an area called Los Meros in Barrio Playa.
Future Plans for the River
The government of Puerto Rico has plans to make changes to this river. They want to canalize it, which means they plan to build walls or channels along its sides. This helps control the river's flow and prevent flooding.
What Roads Does It Cross?
As Río Matilde flows from where it starts to the Caribbean Sea, it passes under several roads. It begins in Barrio Canas and ends in Barrio Playa. Some of the main roads it crosses include parts of PR-2 and PR-52. These crossings often involve bridges that allow traffic to pass over the river.
