The Río Pastillo is a river located in Ponce, Puerto Rico. It is also known as Río Marueño in the area of Barrio Marueño. This river is one of 14 rivers found in the municipality of Ponce.
The Río Pastillo starts high up in the mountains. It flows for about 19 kilometers (12 miles). Then, it joins with the Cañas River. Together, they form the Matilde River. The Pastillo River flows into the Matilde River at a height of 15 feet.
Where the River Starts
The Río Pastillo begins in the northern mountains of Ponce. This area is part of Barrio Marueño and is called Yagrumo. The river flows from these mountains.
It travels for about 19 kilometers (12 miles). Eventually, it reaches the Canas area of Ponce. Here, it meets the Río Canas. When these two rivers meet, they create the Matilde River. The government of Puerto Rico has plans to make changes to this river. These changes would involve building channels to control its flow.
Rivers That Feed It
Two important streams feed into the Pastillo River. These are called Quebrada Limón and Quebrada del Agua. Quebrada del Agua was changed so it could flow directly into the Caribbean Sea. This was done to help manage the water.
Quebrada del Agua used to overflow a lot during heavy rains. This caused big floods. One major flood happened on October 7, 1985.
