Where is Marueño Located?
Marueño is in the northwestern part of Ponce, just northwest of the main city area. It is a mostly mountainous barrio. This is because it sits where the flat coastal lands meet the rugged Cordillera Central mountains.
The highest point in Marueño is called Monte Marueño. It stands at 640 meters (about 2,100 feet) above sea level. The Pastillo River flows through Marueño, dividing it into two almost equal parts. This river starts high up in the mountains of the Guaraguao barrio.
The Story Behind the Name Marueño
The name "Marueño" has its roots in Europe. It's a unique name in Puerto Rico, not found anywhere else on the island. The barrio, its tallest mountain, and the river that flows through it all share this name.
In the old Aragonese language, "Marueño" means "a bunch of rocks." The name might also be linked to another Aragonese word, "murueño." This word means "the end of a field." So, the name could refer to a boundary or the low stone walls used to mark property lines.
What are Marueño's Borders?
Marueño has clear boundaries. To the north, it is bordered by roads like PR-801R and the hills north of PR-501. To the south, it is bordered by Aguamarina Street and Circulacion Street (18th Street) in the Pastillo area.
On the west side, Marueño is bordered by hills about half a mile west of PR-501. On the east side, it is bordered by hills about half a mile east of PR-501.
When looking at its neighbors, Marueño is bordered by:
- Guaraguao barrio to the north.
- Quebrada Limón barrio to the south.
- The municipality of Peñuelas to the west.
- Magueyes and Guaraguao barrios to the east.
