History of Raceland
The area where Raceland now stands was once a large piece of land. It was given to Abraham Buford after the American Revolutionary War. His son, Charles Buford, later divided this land into smaller parts.
One of these parts was given to Benjamen Chinn. He decided to sell his land in smaller town lots. He named this new town "Chinnville". The first post office opened here on March 7, 1910. Chinnville officially became a city on July 31, 1915.
In 1924, a man named Jack O. Keene opened a horse racing track nearby. It was called Raceland Race Course. Because of this famous track, the town changed its name to Raceland on April 1, 1925.
The racetrack was later closed down. For a short time, the city went back to being called Chinnville. But on April 1, 1930, the city was once again named Raceland.
