This community is found in two different counties: Marion and Levy. It was set up as a special district to provide services to its residents. The part in Marion County is near the larger city of Ocala. The part in Levy County is closer to Gainesville. In 2020, about 3,438 people lived here.
Rainbow Lakes Estates is located northwest of Rainbow Springs State Park. This park is famous for its beautiful natural springs. The community has facilities and paved roads for its residents. Many of the building lots here are still empty, waiting for new homes.

US 41 runs along the eastern edge of the community. It's about 6 miles north of a town called Dunnellon. Ocala, which is the main city in Marion County, is about 22 miles to the east. Another town, Williston, is about 17 miles north of Rainbow Lakes Estates.
