Park History: From Theme Park to State Park
Rainbow Springs was once a private theme park back in the 1930s. Imagine being able to look into the water from inside a special sub-boat! The park also had waterfalls, a small zoo, a rodeo, gift shops, and even a monorail.
However, when new highways made it easier to get to bigger attractions in Orlando, fewer people visited Rainbow Springs. Because of this, the park closed down in 1974.
After being closed for many years, Rainbow Springs reopened as a state park in the 1990s. Local people formed a group called the "Friends of Rainbow Springs." They worked hard to clear paths and bring the gardens back to life. Their efforts helped the park open its doors again for everyone to enjoy.
Exploring the Rainbow River
The amazing Rainbow River starts right here at Rainbow Springs. From the springs, the river flows until it joins another river called the Withlacoochee River. It's a beautiful journey for the water!
Amazing Animals and Plants
The park is full of exciting wildlife. You might spot squirrels, otters, turtles, and even alligators! There are also many kinds of birds flying around.
Look up for red-shoulder hawks, swallowtail kites, ospreys, and barred owls. You'll also see many different songbirds and hummingbirds. If you enjoy walking, there's a two-mile nature trail where you can explore and see these animals and plants up close.

Rainbow Springs State Park offers many fun activities for visitors. You can go swimming or snorkeling in the clear spring waters. It's also a great place for canoeing and kayaking. Of course, watching for wildlife is always a popular activity!
The park has a full-service campground if you want to stay longer. There are picnic areas with covered spots, and you can rent canoes and kayaks right at the park. You'll also find beautiful gardens to walk through. The park even has some waterfalls and old phosphate pits from when mining used to happen here.
Near the entrance, there's a visitor center with a small shop and a snack bar. It's located in a high spot, giving you a great view of Rainbow Springs and the start of the Rainbow River.
