History of Levy County
Levy County was created in 1845, after the Seminole Wars. It was named after David Levy Yulee, an important person in Florida's history. He was chosen in 1841 to represent Florida in the U.S. House of Representatives.
When Florida became a state, David Levy Yulee was elected as one of its first two U.S. senators. He served from 1845 to 1851, and again from 1855 to 1861. He was the first Jewish American person to be elected to the United States Senate.
David Levy Yulee helped Florida grow by building the state's first railroad. This railroad, called the Florida Railroad, connected the important ports of Fernandina on the Atlantic Ocean and Cedar Key on the Gulf of Mexico. He also built other smaller railroads across central Florida. Because of his hard work, he is known as "the father of Florida railroads."
