History of Yankeetown
Yankeetown was started in 1923 by Armanis F. Knotts. He was a politician and lawyer from Indiana. He moved to this area because he loved hunting. The first name for the settlement was "Knotts Village", named after his last name.
However, there's a fun story about how it got its current name. A local mail carrier, who didn't like people from the North, would often jokingly tell visitors to go to "that Yankee town." Because of this, the "Town of Yankeetown" officially became a town in 1925. In the 1930s, there were plans for a big canal, called the Cross Florida Canal, to end in Yankeetown. But this canal was never built.
