Early Life
Raine Maida was born Michael Anthony Maida in Weston, Ontario, in 1970. Before he became a musician, he studied criminology (the study of crime) at the University of Toronto. Around late 1991, he changed his first name from "Michael" to "Raine."
Music Career
Our Lady Peace
Raine Maida is the lead singer and one of the founders of the Canadian rock band Our Lady Peace. He started the band in 1992 with guitarist Mike Turner.
On the band's early albums, Maida often sang in a high, nasal style. This unique voice, along with his creative lyrics, became a signature part of the band's sound. Later, after working with famous producer Bob Rock, his voice became a little deeper and less nasal. On the band's 2012 album, Curve, he returned to his older singing style.
With Our Lady Peace, Maida has released many successful albums, including Naveed, Clumsy, and Gravity.
Solo Work
Maida also creates music on his own. In 2006, he released an EP (a short album) called Love Hope Hero. His first full-length solo album, The Hunters Lullaby, came out in 2007. Maida described it as "a collection of poems put to music." His wife, Chantal Kreviazuk, sings and plays piano on several of the songs.
In 2012, he released a free EP called Pachamama. His second full solo album, We All Get Lighter, was released in 2013.
Writing and Producing for Other Artists
Besides his own music, Maida helps other artists create theirs. A music producer helps guide artists in the studio to get the best sound for their songs.
He has worked with many famous musicians. He co-wrote and produced five songs on Avril Lavigne's 2004 album, Under My Skin. He and his wife, Chantal, also helped write hit songs for Kelly Clarkson, including "Walk Away".
They have also written songs for artists like The Veronicas, Hilary Duff, and Carrie Underwood. Maida has also worked with rock bands like Hawk Nelson and Marianas Trench.
S!NG App
Maida is the Chief Product Officer for a company called S!NG. It created a free app that helps artists protect their work using a technology called NFTs.
An NFT is like a digital certificate that proves who owns an original piece of art, music, or video. Maida says this technology is a "game changer" because it gives artists more control over their creations. It allows them to sell their work directly to fans.
Maida explained that this helps artists connect with their fans in a better way. "The ability to sell directly to your fans and monetize that in ways that we never really thought of before, it’s a tectonic shift that’s happening," he said.
Other Work and Charity
Maida and his wife are strong supporters of the charity War Child, which helps children affected by war. They have traveled to places like Iraq and Ethiopia to help and make documentaries. Maida even produced a benefit album for the charity.
For his work, he has received many awards. In 2014, he and Kreviazuk were both appointed to the Order of Canada, one of the country's highest honors, for their charity work.
Maida also had a small acting role in the 2001 Canadian movie Century Hotel.
Personal Life
Maida met Canadian singer-songwriter Chantal Kreviazuk at a Pearl Jam concert in 1996. They got married in 1999 and have three sons. In 2009, they renewed their wedding vows to celebrate their tenth anniversary.
The couple sometimes performs together as a duo called Moon Vs. Sun. In 2019, they released a documentary called I'm Going to Break Your Heart. The film showed them working on an album together and dealing with the challenges of their long marriage.
