Ramón Sampedro Cameán (born January 5, 1943 – died January 12, 1998) was a Spanish seaman and writer. When he was 25 years old, on August 23, 1968, Ramón had a diving accident. This accident caused him to become a quadriplegic, meaning he could not move his arms or legs. For the next 29 years, Ramón fought for his right to make his own choices about his life and how it would end.

Ramón Sampedro passed away on January 12, 1998, in Boiro, Spain. His close friend, Ramona Maneiro, was with him.

Years later, Ramona Maneiro spoke on a Spanish talk show. She shared that she had helped Ramón fulfill his wish to end his life. She said, "I did it for love." She also mentioned that she recorded Ramón's last words on a video camera.

Two Spanish films have been made about Ramón Sampedro's life:

  • Condenado a vivir (which means Condemned to Live) was a TV-movie released in 2001. It was directed by Roberto Bodegas. The Galician actor Ernesto Chao played Ramón Sampedro in this film.
