Ramón Antonio Esteban Gómez Valdés y Castillo (born September 2, 1923 – died August 9, 1988) was a famous Mexican actor and comedian. He is best known for playing the character Don Ramón in the popular TV show El Chavo del Ocho. Many people remember him as one of Mexico's best comedians.
Ramón Valdés was born in Mexico City. When he was two years old, his family moved to Ciudad Juárez. He came from a large family, and some of his brothers also became actors. Ramón started acting in movies in 1949. Later, he became very famous for his TV roles, especially as Don Ramón.

Early Life and Acting Career
Childhood and First Roles
Ramón Antonio Esteban Gómez Valdés y Castillo was born on September 2, 1923. His parents were Rafael Gómez-Valdés Angellini and Guadalupe Castillo. He grew up in a simple home without many luxuries. He had several brothers and sisters, including his brothers Germán Valdés ("Tin Tan"), Manuel "El Loco" Valdés", and Antonio Valdés ("El Ratón Valdés"), who also became actors. Ramón was sometimes called "El Moncho."
When he was young, Ramón Valdés worked many different jobs. This meant he sometimes had money problems. He started his acting career with help from his brother Germán, who was already a well-known actor. Ramón appeared in over 50 movies during the Golden Age of Mexican cinema. His first movie was Tender Pumpkins in 1949. He often played small or supporting roles in films.
Meeting Chespirito and TV Success
In 1968, Ramón Valdés met Roberto Gómez Bolaños, who was known as "Chespirito." Chespirito saw Ramón's talent and asked him to join his new TV show, Los supergenios de la mesa cuadrada. Ramón worked with other actors like María Antonieta de las Nieves and Rubén Aguirre. This show later changed its name to Chespirito and became very popular.
In 1973, Ramón Valdés joined the cast of El Chavo del Ocho, another show created by Chespirito. This is where he became internationally famous for playing Don Ramón. People say that the character of Don Ramón was very similar to Ramón Valdés in real life. He also played many different characters in El Chapulín Colorado, which started in 1973.
Ramón Valdés left El Chavo del Ocho in 1979. He returned in 1981 for one more year. His return was kept a secret from the cast. When he surprised La Chilindrina (played by María Antonieta de las Nieves) on set, her tears were real because she was so happy to see him. After that year, he left the show for good.
Later Projects
After leaving El Chavo del Ocho, Ramón Valdés continued to act in films until 1986. In 1982, he worked with Carlos Villagrán on a Venezuelan TV show called Federrico. His last TV project was Ah que Kiko in 1987.
Other Activities
In 1984, Ramón Valdés appeared in a musical TV show called "Aprendiz de Pirata" (Pirate Apprentice). He performed with the famous singer Luis Miguel.
Personal Life
Ramón Valdés had Italian family roots. He also owned a circus at one point. He had three wives and a total of 10 children. One of his wives was the singer Araceli Julián.
Ramón Valdés was very good friends with Angelines Fernández, who played Doña Clotilde "La Bruja del 71" on El Chavo del Ocho. At his funeral, Angelines Fernández stood by his coffin and cried sadly. He was also close friends with María Antonieta de las Nieves.
His brother Manuel "El Loco" Valdés was the father of Mexican pop singer Cristian Castro, making Ramón Valdés Cristian Castro's uncle.
Death
Ramón Valdés had some health issues. He passed away on August 9, 1988, at the age of 64, due to stomach cancer. The cancer had spread to his spinal cord. He was buried at Mausoleos del Ángel in Mexico City, the same cemetery where his friend Angelines Fernández was later buried.
Legacy
Ramón Valdés is remembered as one of the most loved actors from El Chavo del Ocho. His portrayal of Don Ramón made him a legend.
Documentary About His Life
On May 17, 2019, a trailer was released for a documentary called Con permisito dijo Monchito (which means "Excuse me, said Little Moncho"). This documentary, released on Valdés’ official YouTube channel, shares new information about his life. It includes interviews with fans and people he worked with, showing little-known facts about him.
