How Ram Trucks Started
Before the 1970s, Dodge had a separate brand for trucks called Fargo Trucks. These trucks were mostly sold outside the United States. After that, all trucks made by Chrysler were sold under the Dodge name.
In June 2009, Chrysler faced some financial challenges. Fiat Group then bought a part of Chrysler. This led to big changes within the company. The goal was to improve the quality and luxury of their vehicles.
Ram Trucks became its own division of Chrysler in 2010. It spun off from Dodge, taking the name of the Dodge Ram pickup trucks. Chrysler wanted the Ram Trucks brand to focus on people who truly needed trucks for work or specific uses. They aimed to serve "real truck customers."
Ram also started selling the Fiat Ducato cargo van as the Ram ProMaster in North America. This helped fill a gap in their van lineup. The company wanted to sell more trucks, aiming for higher numbers each year.
Ram trucks are marketed differently from Dodge cars. This helps Dodge have a separate image, focusing on being "hip, cool, young, energetic." This image is different from what truck buyers usually look for.
Over the years, there have been changes in leadership at Ram Trucks. In 2021, Fiat Chrysler merged with the French PSA Group to form Stellantis. This new company now owns Ram Trucks. Stellantis plans to introduce its first hydrogen-powered vehicle in North America.
