Rasāyana (रसायन) is a Sanskrit word that means "path of essence." It's an ancient Ayurvedic medical idea about ways to live longer and make the body stronger. It's one of eight main areas of medicine in old Sanskrit writings. In ancient Indian chemistry, "rasa" could also mean "metal" or "mineral."

History of Rasayana

The general name for the Indian science of alchemy (an early form of chemistry) is Rasaśāstra. This means "The Science of Mercury" in languages like Nepali, Marathi, Hindi, and Kannada.

Old Indian texts about alchemy talk about using specially prepared forms of mercury or cinnabar. They also mention making medical tinctures (liquid medicines) in this early science.

A lot of progress in alchemy happened in ancient India. An 11th-century Persian chemist and doctor named Abū Rayhān Bīrūnī wrote about it. He said that Indians had a science like alchemy, which was special to them. They called it Rasâyana. He explained it as an art using certain methods, drugs, and mixed medicines, mostly from plants. He believed it could help very sick people get well and make older people feel young again.

Two famous examples of people who worked with Rasayana were Nagarjunacharya and Nityanadhiya. Nagarjunacharya was a very important chemist in Indian alchemy. He did many experiments in his lab, called the "Rasashala." His book, Rasaratanakaram, is a famous example of ancient Indian medicine. In it, he describes how to change common metals, like mercury, into gold. Because of his great work in chemistry, he became the head of the famous Nalanda university.

Goals and Types of Rasayana

Rasayana treatments aim to make your body's "rasa" (essence) richer with good nutrients. This helps you live longer, remember things better, become smarter, and have good health. It can also help you stay youthful, have great skin and a clear voice. It helps your body and senses develop well, and can even bring respect and brightness to your life.

Main Goals of Rasayana

The main goals of rasāyana were varied. But the effects people hoped for usually included:

  • Longer Life and Youth:

* Living for more years. * Staying young, stopping, or even reversing signs of aging like wrinkles.

  • Better Health:

* Making body functions and senses new or keeping them strong. * Overcoming illnesses, especially tough diseases linked to old age.

  • Sharper Mind:

* Remembering more things. * Becoming smarter. * Understanding things better.

  • More Strength:

* Becoming physically stronger. * Becoming more fertile.

  • Special Abilities:

* Gaining amazing powers to change the world. * Getting supernatural strength, quickness, and long life.

Basically, rasāyana helps improve many parts of your body's energy and life force.

Different Kinds of Rasayana

There are different types of Rasayana:

  • Kamya Rasayanas: These help keep you healthy in general. They boost your energy, make your body stronger against sickness, and improve your overall health.
    • Pranakamya: This type helps improve your energy and helps you live longer.
    • Medhakamya: This type helps make you smarter.
    • Srikamya: This type helps improve your skin and looks.
  • Naimittika Rasayanas: These are used to help fight a specific sickness.

To achieve these goals, herbal medicines are often used. These are made with many different herbs and are often kept in ghee (clarified butter) and honey. Chyawanprasha is a well-known traditional Rasayana. Some special herbs that help the body adapt to stress are also used in Rasayanas. These include haritaki, amla, shilajit, ashwaganda, holy basil, guduchi, and shatavari.

Some of these Rasayana herbs have been studied to see how they help the body handle stress. Researchers found that certain plant extracts helped protect animals from different kinds of stress. They also found that these plants were safe to use. Studies showed that these plants helped boost the body's immune system.

Rasayana Formulas

Many traditional Rasayana formulas have been described. These old formulas often contained many ingredients. They included minerals, pearl, coral, and even gems. They also used specially prepared mercury (the word ras often means mercury is an ingredient).

Over time, the use of these traditional formulas has gone down. This is partly because of negative stories about them and their high cost. Most of the Rasayana preparations available today use mostly herbal ingredients, with only a few minerals or animal products. It's also become very hard to get ingredients like musk, amber, or parts of wild animals due to laws protecting wildlife.

Today's Rasayana formulas often use ingredients like fresh amla (Emblica officinalis), which has a lot of vitamin C. Other common ingredients include Terminalia belerica, Terminalia chebula, Shilajit, Long pepper, Black pepper, Ginger, processed Guggul, Guduchi, Ashwaganda, and Shatavari.

The science of Rasayana in Ancient India was not as advanced as chemistry is today. Still, Rasayana was widely used. Some examples of how it was used include the paints in the famous Ajanta and Ellora caves in Maharashtra state. Also, the special steel of the Vishnustambha (a tall tower) and a treated wood sample in the Kondivade caves near the Rajmachi fort in Maharashtra show how Rasayana was applied.

Rasayana as a Drink

In many Indian homes, Rasayana is also a type of fruit squash or juice. It's served as a drink, a dessert, or with meals. In the Tulunadu area of India, people make Banana and Mango Rasayana. They mix fruit pulp with cow's milk or coconut milk until it's thick. This Rasayana can be drunk as a juice by adding water or milk. If it's thick, it's eaten with dosa, chapati, or meals. Sometimes, Rasayana is also known as lassi. Many people believe this type of Rasayana helps them stay cool during the hot Indian summers.

Rasayana is often given to religious followers as Prasadam (a holy offering). In this case, it's made of thin slices of banana, milk or curd, sugar, and honey.
