Rashard Malick Higgins (born October 7, 1994), known as "Hollywood", is a former American football player. He played as a wide receiver in the National Football League (NFL). Before joining the NFL, he played college football for the Colorado State Rams. He was even named an All-American in 2014. Higgins played for the Cleveland Browns and the Carolina Panthers. He retired from professional football in April 2024.

Early Life and High School Sports

Rashard Higgins grew up in Mesquite, Texas. He went to Mesquite High School. There, he was a talented athlete in three different sports. He played football, basketball, and ran track.

Football at Mesquite High

On the football team, Higgins played as a wide receiver. A wide receiver is a player who catches passes from the quarterback. In his final year, he caught 69 passes for 1,136 yards. He also scored 10 touchdowns. A touchdown is when a player carries the ball into the opponent's end zone. Experts at Rivals.com rated him as a "two-star recruit." This means they thought he was a good player, but not one of the very best.

Basketball and Track

Higgins was also a starter on his high school basketball team. He scored about 17 points in each game. In track and field, he was very fast. He ran the 200-meter dash in 22.76 seconds. He also competed in the long jump, jumping 6.68 meters (about 21 feet, 8 inches).

College Football Career

In 2013, Rashard Higgins started playing college football for Colorado State University. He was a "true freshman," meaning he played in his first year of college. He played in all 14 games that season. He set a new school record for freshmen with 68 catches. He gained 837 yards and scored six touchdowns.

Sophomore Success

In 2014, as a sophomore, Higgins had an amazing season. He was a finalist for the Biletnikoff Award. This award goes to the best wide receiver in college football. That year, he led the entire nation in receiving yards with 1,750. He also led with 17 receiving touchdowns. He was named an All-American. This means he was recognized as one of the best college football players in the country.

College Achievements

  • He was named the Mountain West Preseason Offensive Player of the Year in 2015.
  • He had 12 games where he gained 100 or more receiving yards.
  • In just two seasons, he caught 164 passes for 2,587 yards and 23 touchdowns.

Professional Football Career

After his successful college career, Rashard Higgins entered the NFL draft in 2016. The NFL draft is where professional teams choose new players.

The Cleveland Browns picked Higgins in the fifth round. He was the 172nd player chosen overall. In May 2016, he signed a four-year contract with the Browns. This contract was worth about $2.52 million. He also received a signing bonus of about $184,000. In his first year, he caught six passes for 77 yards.

In 2017, Higgins was briefly "waived" by the Browns. This means they let him go from the team. But he was quickly signed to their "practice squad." The practice squad is a group of players who train with the team but don't usually play in games. Soon after, he was moved back to the main team, called the "active roster." In a game against the Baltimore Ravens, he had his best game yet with seven catches for 95 yards. Later that season, he scored his first two NFL touchdowns.

Higgins continued to improve in 2018. He caught 39 passes for 572 yards and scored four touchdowns. In 2019, the Browns kept him on the team. He scored a game-winning touchdown against the Buffalo Bills.

In 2020, Higgins re-signed with the Browns. He had his first game with over 100 receiving yards against the Cincinnati Bengals. He was briefly placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list in December 2020. This was a special list for players who had COVID-19 or were exposed to it. He was back on the team a few days later. In March 2021, he signed another one-year deal with the Browns.

Carolina Panthers and Retirement

On March 16, 2022, Higgins signed a one-year contract with the Carolina Panthers. He played in three games for the Panthers but did not catch any passes.

On April 15, 2024, Rashard Higgins announced he was retiring from the NFL. He said he would sign a special one-day contract to officially retire as a Cleveland Brown. This is a way for players to end their careers with the team they are most known for.
