Rashawn Slater started playing for Northwestern as a freshman. He played in 12 games as a right tackle. He was named to the Big Ten Conference All-Freshman Team. A sports analysis group, Pro Football Focus, called him the best freshman offensive lineman in the country.

In his second year, Slater continued to impress. He started all 14 games for Northwestern. The coaches in the Big Ten Conference named him to the third team All-Big Ten. As a junior, he started 11 games and did not allow any sacks. This means no opposing player tackled the quarterback while Slater was blocking. He earned an honorable mention for All-Big Ten.

Before his senior year, Slater was expected to have a great season. He was named a preseason All-American. He was also on the Outland Trophy watchlist, which is for the best college interior lineman. However, the Big Ten season was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Slater then decided to prepare for the 2021 NFL draft. He still finished his degree in communications in December 2020.

In the 2022 season, Slater faced a challenge. In Week 3, he hurt his biceps tendon. This injury meant he could not play for the rest of that season. However, he came back strong in the 2023 season. He started all 17 games for the Chargers that year.
