Rashawn Slater (born March 26, 1999) is an American professional football player. He plays as an offensive tackle for the Los Angeles Chargers in the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the Northwestern Wildcats before joining the NFL. The Chargers chose him in the first round of the 2021 NFL draft.

Early Life and High School Football
Rashawn Slater grew up in Sugar Land, Texas. He went to Fort Settlement Middle School and Clements High School. In high school, he was a top player. He was named first team All-District in his junior and senior years. As a senior, he was also named second team All-Greater Houston.
Slater was considered a three-star recruit. This means he was a highly-rated player coming out of high school. He decided to play college football for the Northwestern Wildcats. He chose Northwestern over offers from other big schools.
College Football Career
Rashawn Slater started playing for Northwestern as a freshman. He played in 12 games as a right tackle. He was named to the Big Ten Conference All-Freshman Team. A sports analysis group, Pro Football Focus, called him the best freshman offensive lineman in the country.
In his second year, Slater continued to impress. He started all 14 games for Northwestern. The coaches in the Big Ten Conference named him to the third team All-Big Ten. As a junior, he started 11 games and did not allow any sacks. This means no opposing player tackled the quarterback while Slater was blocking. He earned an honorable mention for All-Big Ten.
Before his senior year, Slater was expected to have a great season. He was named a preseason All-American. He was also on the Outland Trophy watchlist, which is for the best college interior lineman. However, the Big Ten season was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Slater then decided to prepare for the 2021 NFL draft. He still finished his degree in communications in December 2020.
Professional Football Career
The Los Angeles Chargers picked Rashawn Slater in the first round of the 2021 NFL draft. He was the 13th player chosen overall. He signed his first professional contract with the Chargers on July 27, 2021. This contract was for four years.
As a rookie, Slater became the Chargers' starting left tackle. He played so well that he was chosen for his first Pro Bowl. The Pro Bowl is an all-star game for the best players in the NFL. He was also named to the PFWA All-Rookie Team. This team recognizes the best new players in the league.
In the 2022 season, Slater faced a challenge. In Week 3, he hurt his biceps tendon. This injury meant he could not play for the rest of that season. However, he came back strong in the 2023 season. He started all 17 games for the Chargers that year.
On April 29, 2024, the Chargers decided to keep Slater for an extra year on his contract. He started 15 games in the 2024 season. On July 27, 2025, Slater signed a new, big contract with the Chargers. This new deal will keep him with the team until the 2029 season.
Personal Life
Rashawn Slater comes from a family of athletes. His father, Reggie Slater, used to play professional basketball in the NBA. Rashawn's older brother, RJ, also played football. RJ was an offensive lineman for the United States Air Force Academy from 2014 to 2017.
