Rear-Admiral Rashid Ahmed was an important two-star admiral in the Pakistan Navy. He was born in 1918 and passed away in 2005. He is well-known for serving as the Chief of Staff. He held this role under Commander in Chief Vice-Admiral Muzaffar Hassan. Rashid Ahmed led the Navy during the important events of the war with India in 1971.
Life and Career
Early Military Life
Rashid Ahmed was born in British India. He joined the Royal Indian Navy in 1938. He took part in World War II in the Burma area. He was stationed in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. There, he fought against the Imperial Japanese Navy from 1944 to 1945.
After World War II, he went to the Britannia Royal Naval College from 1945 to 1947. He studied technical courses there. When India was divided in 1947, he joined the Pakistan Navy. At that time, he was a Lieutenant-Commander.
Leadership Roles
From 1949 to 1951, he attended the Joint Service Defence College in the United Kingdom. After returning, he took on command roles at the Navy Headquarters in Karachi. From 1952 to 1956, Lieutenant-Commander Ahmed commanded the ship PNS Tariq. He also traveled to the Suez Canal during this time.
In the 1960s, Captain Rashid Ahmed became the Deputy Chief of Naval Staff for Operations. He was part of the second war with India in 1965.
From 1967 to 1969, Commodore Ahmed worked as the managing director of the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation. This company deals with shipping.
Chief of Staff and Retirement
In 1969, Rear-Admiral Rashid Ahmed moved to the Navy Headquarters. He was appointed as the Chief of Staff. He served under Commander in Chief Vice-Admiral Muzaffar Hassan. In 1971, he visited China. He went there to discuss getting defense equipment for the Navy.
As Chief of Staff, he led the Pakistan Navy during the war against the Indian Navy in 1971. After the war ended and East Pakistan became Bangladesh, Rear-Admiral Ahmed was among the senior officers who were retired. In April 1972, he was retired from his service.
After his retirement from the Navy, he continued to work. He worked for the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation again. In the 1980s, he was also the managing director of Pakistan State Oil. He then lived a quiet life in Islamabad and passed away in 2005.
