Exploring Raven Crag
Where is Raven Crag?
Raven Crag is the highest point on a ridge that stretches for about 2 miles. This ridge runs along the western side of Thirlmere reservoir. It branches off from the main group of hills in the central Lake District.
Other Tops Nearby
Besides Raven Crag, there are two other important tops on this ridge:
- The Benn: This top is also known as Benn Man. It stands about 1,463 feet (446 meters) high.
- Castle Crag: This top is about 1,381 feet (421 meters) high. It's famous because it was once home to an Iron Age settlement. Imagine people living up there thousands of years ago!
Much of the ridge around Raven Crag has been planted with lots of pine trees. This area is known as the Thirlmere Forest. Raven Crag itself stands out as a rocky area among all the trees.
How to Climb Raven Crag
The main rocky face of Raven Crag rises steeply above the Thirlmere Dam. From the dam, it looks like a tall, sheer cliff about 500 feet (150 meters) high. The best way to climb Raven Crag is usually from the dam.
Popular Paths
- There's a clear path through the forest from the dam. It's quite steep in places.
- Near the top, the path gets easier with special walkways and short wooden sections.
- You can also reach the ridge from a place called Armboth.
- Another way to climb is from the 'back' of the fell, through Shoulthwaite. This route lets you visit The Benn and the old earth walls of Castle Crag.
Views from the Top
The very top of Raven Crag has a rocky outcrop with a small pile of stones, called a cairn. Some trees block the view from the exact summit.
What You Can See
- If you walk to the edge of the crag, you get an amazing view looking down on the Thirlmere Dam.
- You can also see the Thirlmere reservoir stretching out to the south.
- From The Benn and Castle Crag, you get a great close-up view of Raven Crag itself.
