History of Ravenna Football Club
How the Club Started in 1913
The Ravenna football club began in 1913. It was first a football part of a bigger sports club called Unione Sportiva Ravennate.
In 1920, this football club joined with another team, Audace Football Club. Audace had only been formed a year earlier in 1919. In the same year, the club became part of the Italian Football Federation. They started playing in a league called Promozione.
Another team, S.G. Forti per essere Liberi, joined them in 1921. Because of this, the club changed its name to Unione Sportiva Ravennate Forti per essere Liberi. In 1928, the main sports club split up. All its sports sections became separate. The football part then became known as Associazione Calcio Ravenna.
Playing as U.S. Ravenna
In 1936, Ravenna played in Serie C for the first time. They stayed in this league until 1948. In 1949, the club was playing in an amateur league called Interregionale. They then changed their name to Unione Sportiva Ravenna.
For ten years starting in 1954, they were called Sarom Unione Sportiva Ravenna. This was because of a sponsor. Ravenna went back to Serie C in 1950 for one season. They returned again in 1955 and played there until 1971. Then they moved down to Serie D.
They had another time in Serie C from 1972 to 1976. After that, they moved down two leagues in a row. But then, they got promoted twice from 1980 to 1982. This brought them back to the professional leagues in Serie C2.
Ravenna moved down to Serie D in 1984. But they quickly returned to Serie C2. In 1992, Ravenna won the Serie C2 championship. This meant they were promoted to Serie C1. Just one year later, in 1993, Ravenna won the Serie C1 league. This was a big moment as they were promoted to Serie B for the very first time.
However, they only stayed in Serie B for one season. In 1994, Ravenna went back to Serie C1. They returned to Serie B in 1996. They played in Italy's second-highest league until 2001. Then they were moved down to Serie C1. After this, the football federation removed them from the league due to money problems.
The Era of Ravenna Calcio
A new club was formed, called Ravenna Calcio. This new team was allowed to play in the Eccellenza Emilia-Romagna league. They were promoted two times in a row. This brought them back to Serie C2 in 2003.
In 2005, Ravenna was promoted to Serie C1 after winning in the playoffs. On May 9, 2007, Ravenna won the 2006–07 Serie C1/B league. They won it early, with one game left to play. This happened after a 0–0 tie against Teramo. This win meant they were promoted to Serie B again. It had been six seasons since they were last in Italy's second-highest division.
They were moved down in 2008 after a difficult Serie B season. They went back to Lega Pro Prima Divisione. In their first season back in Serie C1 (now called Lega Pro Prima Divisione), Gianluca Atzori was their new coach. They almost got promoted right away. But they lost in the playoff semifinals to Padova.
For the 2009–10 season, Ravenna needed a new coach. Atzori left to join a Serie A club, Catania. Vincenzo Esposito, who used to coach the youth team for Inter, became the new coach. The season started with a sad event. A young player named Brian Filipi, who was only 20, died after being hit by a car on September 19, 2009.
On July 18, 2011, the club was removed from Lega Pro Prima Divisione. But on August 12, 2011, they were allowed to play in Serie D/D. This happened after they reached an agreement with the FIGC.
Financial Troubles and Relegation in 2012
In the 2011–12 season, the team was moved down to Eccellenza. On June 29, 2012, Ravenna Calcio was having big money problems. A court in Ravenna declared the club bankrupt.
From S.C. Ravenna Sport 2019 to Ravenna Football Club
A new club was started, called Ravenna Sport 2019. This club was allowed to play in the Promozione Emilia-Romagna league. They were then promoted to Eccellenza Emilia-Romagna.
In the summer of 2013, the club changed its name to its current one, Ravenna Football Club.
