Club History
How Ravenna FC Started
The club began in 1913 as the football part of a bigger sports club called Unione Sportiva Ravennate. In 1920, this football team joined with Audace Football Club. That same year, the club became part of the Italian Football Federation and played in the Promozione league.
In 1921, they merged again with S.G. Forti per essere Liberi. This made them change their name to Unione Sportiva Ravennate Forti per essere Liberi. By 1928, the main sports club split up. The football team then became its own club, known as Associazione Calcio Ravenna.
Playing in the Leagues
In 1936, Ravenna first played in Serie C. They stayed there until 1948. In 1949, the club was in an amateur league called Interregionale. They changed their name to Unione Sportiva Ravenna. For ten years starting in 1954, they were called Sarom Unione Sportiva Ravenna because of a sponsor.
Ravenna returned to Serie C in 1950 for one season. They came back to Serie C in 1955 and played there until 1971, when they moved down to Serie D. They had another time in Serie C from 1972 to 1976. After that, they moved down two leagues in a row.
From 1980 to 1982, they earned two promotions in a row. This brought them back to the professional leagues, into the new Serie C2. Ravenna went down to Serie D in 1984 but quickly returned to Serie C2.
In 1992, Ravenna won the Serie C2 championship. This meant they were promoted to Serie C1. Just one year later, in 1993, Ravenna won Serie C1. This was a big moment as they moved up to Serie B for the first time ever. However, they only stayed for one season and returned to Serie C1 in 1994.
They went back to Serie B in 1996. They played in Italy's second-highest league until 2001. Then, they were moved down to Serie C1. After this, the football federation removed them because of money problems.
Ravenna Calcio is Formed
A new club, called Ravenna Calcio, was allowed to play in Eccellenza Emilia-Romagna. They earned two promotions in a row, which brought them back to Serie C2 in 2003.
In 2005, Ravenna moved up to Serie C1 after winning playoff games. On May 9, 2007, Ravenna won the 2006–07 Serie C1/B league. They won with one game left to play after a 0–0 tie against Teramo. This meant they were promoted to Serie B. This was six seasons after their last time in Italy's second-highest league.
They were moved down in 2008 after a difficult Serie B season. They went to Lega Pro Prima Divisione. In their first season back in Serie C1 (now called Lega Pro Prima Divisione), Gianluca Atzori was their new coach. Ravenna almost got promoted right away but lost in the playoff semifinals to Padova.
For the 2009–10 season, Ravenna needed a new coach. Atzori left for a Serie A club. Vincenzo Esposito became the new coach. The season started with a sad event. On September 19, 2009, young player Brian Filipi sadly passed away.
On July 18, 2011, the Federal Council removed Ravenna from Lega Pro Prima Divisione. But on August 12, 2011, they were allowed to play in Serie D/D after talking with the FIGC.
Financial Challenges and Rebuilding
In the 2011–12 season, the team was moved down to Eccellenza. On June 29, 2012, Ravenna Calcio had serious money problems. A court in Ravenna declared the club bankrupt.
From Ravenna Sport 2019 to Ravenna Football Club
A new club, called Ravenna Sport 2019, was allowed to play in Promozione Emilia-Romagna. They were promoted to Eccellenza Emilia-Romagna. In the summer of 2013, the club changed its name to the current one: Ravenna Football Club.
