Ray Sherman, born on November 27, 1951, is a well-known American football coach. He has spent over 40 years coaching football teams at both college and professional levels.

Ray Sherman's Coaching Journey

College Football Coaching

Ray Sherman played college football at Fresno State. He played as both a wide receiver and a defensive back. In 1974, he started his coaching career as a graduate assistant at San Jose State.

After leaving San Jose State, Sherman continued coaching at the college level until 1987. During this time, he worked for five other schools. This included two different periods coaching at the University of California.

NFL Coaching Career

Ray Sherman got his first coaching job in the NFL in 1988. The Houston Oilers hired him as a running backs coach. He stayed with the Oilers for another year, coaching wide receivers.

In 1990, Sherman joined the Atlanta Falcons as an assistant head coach. The next year, he moved to the San Francisco 49ers. He coached running backs in 1991 and then wide receivers for the next two seasons.

The Minnesota Vikings hired Sherman in 1995 as their quarterbacks coach. He worked with the Vikings for three seasons. In 1998, he became the offensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers. The following year, 1999, he was the offensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings.

From 2000 to 2004, Sherman was the wide receivers coach for the Green Bay Packers. He then held the same position with the Tennessee Titans in 2005 and 2006. In 2007, the Dallas Cowboys hired him as their wide receivers coach.

In January 2010, Ray Sherman was considered for a head coaching job with the Oakland Raiders. In January 2011, he interviewed for the head coaching position of the Dallas Cowboys. It was later announced that he would not return to the Cowboys for the 2011 season.

In 2019, Sherman returned to the Pittsburgh Steelers as an interim wide receivers coach. He took on this role after the team's coach, Darryl Drake, passed away in August of that year.

On September 13, 2022, Sherman was officially hired by the Vegas Vipers. The Vegas Vipers were part of the XFL football league. However, on January 1, 2024, it was announced that the Vipers would not be part of the new UFL merger.

Personal Life

Ray Sherman is married and has three children. Sadly, one of his children passed away in 2003.
