Razia al-Din, also known as Razia Sultana (1205-1240), was a very important ruler in the history of India. She was the first and only Muslim woman to rule the Delhi Sultanate. People described her as brave, kind, and fair. She became the ruler in 1236 A.D. However, some powerful people did not want a woman to rule them. They fought against her, and she was sadly killed in a battle.

Who Was Razia Sultana?

Razia Sultana was a powerful queen who ruled over a large area in India. This area was called the Delhi Sultanate. She was born around 1205 in a place called Budaun, India. Her father was Iltutmish, a very strong sultan himself.

Her Early Life

Razia grew up in a royal family. Unlike many girls at the time, she was trained in many skills. She learned how to ride horses and use weapons. Her father saw that she was very smart and capable. He believed she could be a great leader.

Becoming Sultanah

After her father died, there was a lot of confusion. Her brother, Rukn ud din Firuz, became ruler first. But he was not a good leader. The people of Delhi were unhappy with him. They remembered Razia's strength and fairness.

So, in 1236, the people chose Razia to be their new ruler. She became the Sultanah of Delhi. This was a very rare event. It was unusual for a woman to hold such a high position.

Challenges and Rule

Razia was a strong and just ruler. She dressed like a man and rode an elephant in public. This showed everyone that she was in charge. She worked hard to make her kingdom better. She built schools and libraries. She also tried to improve trade and make her people safe.

However, many powerful nobles did not like being ruled by a woman. They thought it was against their traditions. They often tried to challenge her power. Razia had to be very smart and brave to deal with these challenges.

Her Legacy

Razia Sultana ruled for about four years. She faced many battles against those who opposed her. Sadly, she was killed in 1240. She was only about 34 or 35 years old.

Even though her rule was short, Razia Sultana is remembered as an important figure. She showed that a woman could be a strong and effective leader. Her story inspires many people even today. She proved that courage and fairness are important qualities for any ruler.
