Rebecca Augusta Miller (born September 15, 1962) is an American filmmaker and writer. She is known for directing and writing movies like Angela (1995), Personal Velocity: Three Portraits (2002), and Maggie's Plan (2015). She has also written novels such as The Private Lives of Pippa Lee and Jacob's Folly.
Miller won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival for Personal Velocity. She also received the Gotham Independent Film Award for Breakthrough Director for her film Angela.
Rebecca Miller is the daughter of Arthur Miller, a famous writer who won a Pulitzer Prize. Her mother was Inge Morath, a well-known photographer.

Growing Up and School
Rebecca Miller was born in Roxbury, Connecticut. Her father, Arthur Miller, was a playwright, and her mother, Inge Morath, was a photographer from Austria. Her younger brother, Daniel, was born in 1966.
Rebecca grew up surrounded by artists. Famous sculptor Alexander Calder lived nearby. She also learned drawing from another neighbor, sculptor Philip Grausman.
Miller went to Choate Rosemary Hall school. In 1980, she started studying painting and literature at Yale University. After graduating in 1985, she traveled to Munich, Germany, on a special scholarship.
In 1987, Miller moved to New York City. She showed her paintings and sculptures in art galleries. She also studied film at The New School, where she started making short films without spoken words.

Early Career (1988–1994)
In 1988, Rebecca Miller started acting on stage. She also had roles in movies like Regarding Henry (1991) and Consenting Adults (1992).
In 1991, Miller wrote and directed a short film called Florence. It was about a woman who started feeling the same symptoms as others around her. This film helped her get invited to direct a play written by her father.
Miller is a novelist, a director, and a supporter of women in the film industry. She was featured in a 2003 documentary called In The Company of Women.
Films and Books (1995–2009)
Miller wrote and directed her first feature film, Angela, in 1995. It tells the story of a 10-year-old girl trying to help her mother. The film was shown at the Sundance Film Festival. For Angela, Miller won the Open Palm Award and the Filmmaker Trophy at Sundance.
In 2001, Miller's book of short stories, Personal Velocity, was named one of the best books of the year by The Washington Post. Miller then turned these stories into her 2002 film, Personal Velocity: Three Portraits. The film explores how people change when big things happen in their lives.
Personal Velocity: Three Portraits was praised by The New York Times. Miller won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival and the Independent Spirit John Cassavetes Award in 2002 for this film. It is now part of the permanent collection at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.
In 2003, Miller wrote and illustrated a book called A Woman Who. It's a collection of drawings of women. She also wrote the screenplay for the 2005 movie Proof.
Also in 2005, Miller directed her film, The Ballad of Jack and Rose. It stars Daniel Day-Lewis and Camilla Belle. The movie is about a 16-year-old girl named Rose who grew up alone with her father.
In 2009, Miller released her fourth film, The Private Lives of Pippa Lee. This movie is based on her own novel from 2002. It's about a 50-year-old woman looking back at her life. The film stars Robin Wright, Alan Arkin, and Keanu Reeves. It was shown at the Toronto International Film Festival and the Berlin Film Festival.
In 2009, Miller received the Maureen O'Hara Award for her achievements in film.
Recent Work (2013–present)
In 2013, Miller published her novel Jacob's Folly. This complex story is about an 18th-century French man who comes back to life as a housefly in modern New York.
Miller also wrote and directed the film Maggie's Plan in 2015. It's a funny movie filmed in Greenwich Village. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and was shown at many other festivals. It stars Greta Gerwig, Julianne Moore, and Ethan Hawke. Vanity Fair called it "A smart, goofy delight!" Maggie's Plan was released in theaters in 2016.
In 2023, she released her film She Came to Me.
Personal Life

Rebecca Miller met her husband, actor Daniel Day-Lewis, at a movie screening of her father's play, The Crucible. They got married on November 13, 1996.
They have two sons together: Ronan (born 1998) and Cashel (born 2002). Miller is also a stepmother to Daniel Day-Lewis's oldest son, Gabriel Kane Day-Lewis (born 1995).
