History of Red Banks

Red Banks got its name from the red dirt banks of a creek that flows nearby. This creek is on the south side of the community.

Back in 1900, only 79 people lived in Red Banks. The community had two churches and a cotton gin, which was a machine used to separate cotton fibers from their seeds.

Red Banks is located along the BNSF Railway, a major train line. The community became officially recognized on March 14, 1899. Its post office, where people send and receive mail, started operating even earlier, in 1847.

The entire community is part of the Tallahatchie River watershed, which means all the rain that falls here eventually flows into the Tallahatchie River.
