Many old buildings line the streets of Harleston. Some of these homes have a special style called Georgian. This means they were built a long time ago, during the Georgian period.
Early Beginnings: Domesday Book Mentions
The village of Redenhall is very old. It was even mentioned in the Domesday Book. This was a huge survey of England made in 1086. It was ordered by William the Conqueror. The book said that a person named Rada the Dane used to own Redenhall. This was before William the Conqueror came to England. Rada's land was about 700 acres. It had many smaller farms and six plough-teams. The Domesday Book also briefly mentioned Harleston. It said that the Abbot of Bury St. Edmunds was the lord there.
Churches and the Famous Clock Tower
The area has two Church of England churches. In the center of Harleston town is St John the Baptist church. The building you see today was finished in 1872.
Harleston also has a famous clock tower. It was designed in 1876 by George Grimwood. The clock itself was made by Messers Gillet & Bland. This tower stands where an older chapel used to be. That chapel was taken down in 1873. It was once connected to the much larger Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Redenhall. This older church is the main church for the parish.
Past Connections: The Railway Stations
Long ago, Redenhall and Harleston had their own railway stations. These stations connected the towns by train. You could travel to places like Tivetshall St Margaret and Beccles. Redenhall Station closed in 1866. Harleston Station closed later, in 1953. Now, the entire railway line has been removed.
