Early Beginnings: Domesday Book Mentions

The village of Redenhall is very old. It was even mentioned in the Domesday Book. This was a huge survey of England made in 1086. It was ordered by William the Conqueror. The book said that a person named Rada the Dane used to own Redenhall. This was before William the Conqueror came to England. Rada's land was about 700 acres. It had many smaller farms and six plough-teams. The Domesday Book also briefly mentioned Harleston. It said that the Abbot of Bury St. Edmunds was the lord there.

Churches and the Famous Clock Tower

The area has two Church of England churches. In the center of Harleston town is St John the Baptist church. The building you see today was finished in 1872.

Harleston also has a famous clock tower. It was designed in 1876 by George Grimwood. The clock itself was made by Messers Gillet & Bland. This tower stands where an older chapel used to be. That chapel was taken down in 1873. It was once connected to the much larger Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Redenhall. This older church is the main church for the parish.
