History of Redwater

Redwater is located about twelve miles southwest of Texarkana. It started in the mid-1870s around a sawmill. Two men, Daniels and Spence, ran the sawmill. They first named the community Ingersoll, after a famous speaker named Robert Ingersoll.

In 1881, a post office opened in the town. By 1884, about 50 people lived there. In 1886, a big church meeting, called a revival meeting, took place. Many people became religious during this event. After the meeting, the town's residents decided they no longer wanted to honor Robert Ingersoll. They had just dug a new well that produced water with a reddish color. So, they decided to rename the town Redwater. The post office officially changed its name in 1894.

The town grew to about 300 people by 1892. However, by 1900, the population dropped to 128. It slowly grew again to 250 people in the 1920s.

During World War II, two large military facilities were built near Redwater. These were the Red River Army Depot and the Lone Star Army Ammunition Plant. These places created thousands of jobs for people in the area. Because of these jobs, Redwater's population jumped from 250 in the early 1940s to 457 by 1950. In 1990, the population reached 894.

Redwater is also known for being the home of the first recorded set of quadruplets (four babies born at the same time) in the United States.
