History of Regentville
Early European Settlement
After the First Fleet arrived in Australia, land was given to British settlers. The first piece of land in this area was given to Thomas Jamison. He was the Surgeon-General of New South Wales and arrived in 1788.
When Thomas died in 1811, his son, John, took over the land. John was also a surgeon and had fought alongside Admiral Horatio Nelson. He was honored by the prince regent of the United Kingdom in 1813. The prince regent later became King George IV.
Sir John Jamison's Estate
Sir John Jamison came to Sydney in 1814. Over the next twenty years, he became one of the biggest and richest landowners in the colony. In 1823–24, he built a beautiful sandstone house called Regentville House. It was named after the Prince Regent.
Sir John was known for hosting many parties and events at his mansion. People called him the "hospitable knight of Regentville." He also built a tweed mill on his land. He had a dairy farm, a horse stud, gardens, a cemetery, and even a school for the children of his workers. His estate also included an orchard, a vineyard, and fields for sheep and cattle.
The End of Regentville House
Sir John died at Regentville House in 1844 when he was 68. He had lost a lot of his money due to a tough economic time. He is buried in Penrith. His children inherited the estate, but much of the land was sold off over time.
Regentville House later became a mental hospital and then a hotel. Sadly, it burned down in 1868 under strange circumstances. Today, only parts of the house's basement and some walls remain. Sir John's tweed mill is also gone, but you can still see the old terraced vineyard.
The area around where Regentville House once stood is still mostly rural. It has been studied by archaeologists from the University of Sydney. Pictures of the house can be found in different collections.
The Regentville Post Office opened in 1953 and closed in 1979.
