Regina Duarte's Political Activities
Regina Duarte has been involved in politics at different times. She used her public voice to share her opinions.
Her Role in the 2002 Election
In the 2002 Brazilian elections, Regina Duarte spoke out against a former president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. She appeared in a TV ad. In the ad, she said she was worried about what might happen to Brazil if he won. She felt that Brazil's stability was at risk. This caused a lot of discussion at the time.
Involvement with Cansei
Regina Duarte was also part of a group called Cansei. This group was active for a short time. Its name means "I'm tired" in Portuguese.
Serving as Special Secretary of Culture
In January 2020, Regina Duarte was asked to become the Special Secretary of Culture. This happened after the previous secretary, Roberto Alvim, left the job. At first, she wasn't sure if she would take the position. However, after a meeting on January 29, she decided to accept. She officially started her role on March 4, 2020. She was the fourth person to hold this job in President Bolsonaro's government.
Her time as secretary was quite short and had some public discussions. For example, during a TV interview on May 7, she spoke about Brazil's past military rule. She seemed to downplay some of the difficult parts of that time. Later, during the same interview, another actress asked her about helping artists during the COVID-19 pandemic. Regina Duarte ended the interview suddenly.
On May 20, 2020, President Bolsonaro announced a change for Regina Duarte. He posted a video on Twitter. In the video, he said she would move from being Special Secretary of Culture. Instead, she would become the president of Cinemateca Brasileira. This is an important place in São Paulo that saves Brazilian movies and videos. Regina Duarte explained in the video that she missed her family while living in Brasília. Moving to São Paulo would let her live closer to them again. Mário Frias took over her old job as Special Secretary of Culture on June 23, 2020.
