Her Role in the 2002 Election
In the 2002 Brazilian election, Regina Duarte spoke out against a former president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. She appeared in a TV ad where she said she was worried about what might happen to Brazil if he won. She mentioned feeling "afraid" that Brazil might lose its "stability." This caused a lot of discussion at the time.
Becoming Special Secretary of Culture
In early 2020, Regina Duarte was asked to become the Special Secretary of Culture. This job involves overseeing cultural activities in Brazil. After some thought, she accepted the position on January 29, 2020. She officially started her new role on March 4, 2020. She was the fourth person to hold this job in President Jair Bolsonaro's government.
Challenges as Secretary
Regina Duarte's time as Secretary of Culture had some difficult moments. For example, during a TV interview on May 7, she had some challenging discussions about Brazil's past. She also ended an interview when asked about her plans to help artists during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Moving to a New Role
On May 20, 2020, President Bolsonaro announced that Regina Duarte would be moving to a new job. She became the president of Cinemateca Brasileira. This is an important organization in São Paulo that works to save and preserve Brazilian movies and videos. Regina Duarte explained that she missed her family while living in Brasília, the capital city. Moving to São Paulo meant she could live closer to them again. Her replacement as Special Secretary of Culture was Mário Frias.
