Reids Flat is a small, historic village in New South Wales, Australia. It was once known as Numby. This quiet village is part of the Hilltops Council area.

Where is Reids Flat?

Reids Flat is located on the south side of the Lachlan River. It's about 40 kilometers southeast of Wyangala. The village is nestled in the South West Slopes region of New South Wales. It is also hidden within the large Great Dividing Range mountains. The area has interesting rock formations made of a type of rock called grandiorite.

A Glimpse into History

The valley where Reids Flat is located has a rich history. It includes ancient stories from Indigenous Australians. It also has exciting tales about bushrangers.

Bushranger Tales

In the early 1860s, famous bushrangers like Jack Peisley and Frank Gardiner were active here. They often found a safe place to hide at William Fogg's farm. The rocky mountains around the village had many caves. These caves were perfect hiding spots for the bushrangers. People even said that their girlfriends or wives would hang white laundry outside. This was a secret signal to let them know it was safe to come out.

Village Name Change

The village was first called Numby. In 1929, its name was officially changed to Reid's Flat.

Amazing Wool Production

Reids Flat is known for its high-quality wool. Local farmers raise merino sheep. The wool from these sheep is some of the finest in the world. Much of the very thin, 15-micron wool is sold to fashion companies in Italy. The prices paid for this wool are often world records. Many of the families who produce this wool have been farming in the area for over 100 years.

What's in the Village?

Reids Flat is mostly a quiet place where people live. There are no shops or businesses right in the village. The closest shop is about 22 kilometers away in the town of Bigga.

However, Reids Flat does have some important community spots. It has a public hall for events. There is also a showground, which is used for local shows and gatherings. The Reids Flat Public School used to be open, but it officially closed on December 17, 2014.
