History of Remich
In the 5th century, Roman soldiers left the area. The Roman settlement called "Remacum" slowly became "Remich."
Early History and Fortifications
In the 8th century, Pepin the Short, the King of the Franks, gave his land "Hof Remich" to two important monasteries: St. Maximin's Abbey in Trier and Prüm Abbey. In 882, the Normans attacked and destroyed the settlement.
You can still see parts of the old town walls from 952 today. One example is the St. Nicolas gate. This gate was originally a town entrance. It is named after the patron saint of fishermen and sailors. Today, it is a national monument. The main church, called the decanal church, also has a rectangular tower. This tower was once a defensive tower from the 12th century. In 1687, the army of Louis XIV tore down the town's defenses.
Some houses in Remich still show old coats of arms and symbols from different guilds (groups of skilled workers).
Royal Visits and Modern Changes
William II, who was the Grand-Duke of Luxembourg and King of the Netherlands, visited Remich on July 16, 1844. His son, William III, also visited on May 28, 1855. He came with his brother, Prince Henry, who was the Governor of Luxembourg.
The first bridge over the Moselle River was built in 1866. It was destroyed during World War II. A wooden bridge was built first, then the current bridge was built in 1958. Since 1964, the Moselle River has been made deeper and wider. This allows boats to sail on it all year round.
