Renaldo Hill (born November 12, 1978) is an American football coach and a former player. He played as a safety in the NFL for 10 seasons. After his playing career, Hill became a coach. He has worked for teams like the Denver Broncos, Los Angeles Chargers, and Miami Dolphins.

Renaldo Hill's Football Journey

Renaldo Hill started his football career playing in high school and college. He then played for several teams in the NFL before becoming a coach.

Early Years and College

Renaldo grew up in Detroit, Michigan. He went to Chadsey High School, where he was a top player in football for four years. He also did well in his schoolwork.

After high school, Renaldo played college football at Michigan State University. He played as a right cornerback for three years, starting every game. During his time there, he made 182 tackles and caught 9 interceptions. In his first year, he had 5 interceptions, which was his best. He was recognized as one of the best players in the Big Ten Conference.

Playing in the NFL

Renaldo Hill was chosen by the Arizona Cardinals in the 2001 NFL draft. He played for four different teams during his 10 years in the NFL.

Arizona Cardinals (2001–2004)

Renaldo started his NFL career with the Arizona Cardinals. In his first year, he played in 14 games. He got his first half-sack against the Philadelphia Eagles. In 2002, he started more games and made 66 tackles. He also got his first NFL interception against the Dallas Cowboys.

In 2003, Renaldo had a great year, starting 14 games. He caught 5 interceptions, including one he returned 70 yards for a touchdown against the St. Louis Rams. He also had 2 sacks that season. He continued to play for the Cardinals in 2004, making 46 tackles and another interception.

Oakland Raiders (2005)

In 2005, Renaldo joined the Oakland Raiders. He played in all 16 games for them. He mostly played as a nickel cornerback and made 89 tackles. He also had one interception against the Cleveland Browns.

Miami Dolphins (2006–2008)

Renaldo signed with the Miami Dolphins in 2006. This was special because he reunited with his former college coach, Nick Saban. He became the starting free safety and played all 16 games. He had 83 tackles and 2 interceptions that year. He also scored a touchdown by returning a fumble 48 yards.

In 2007, he continued to play well for the Dolphins, making 74 tackles and 3 interceptions. He played another season in Miami in 2008.

Denver Broncos (2009–2010)

In 2009, Renaldo moved to the Denver Broncos. He played two seasons there, starting 15 games in 2009 and all 16 games in 2010. He continued to be a strong player, making many tackles and interceptions.

Over his 10 seasons in the NFL, Renaldo Hill played in 141 games. He made a total of 607 tackles, had 6.5 sacks, and caught 19 interceptions. He also scored 2 defensive touchdowns.

Coaching Career

After his playing days, Renaldo Hill decided to become a football coach.

Early Coaching Roles

He started coaching at Wyoming University in 2012 as a graduate assistant. The next year, he became the cornerbacks coach there. From 2015 to 2017, he coached defensive backs at the University of Pittsburgh.

NFL Coaching

Renaldo returned to the NFL as a coach.

  • In 2018, he was an assistant defensive backs coach for the Miami Dolphins.
  • From 2019 to 2020, he was the defensive backs coach for the Denver Broncos.
  • In 2021, he became the defensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Chargers, which is a very important coaching role. He stayed with the Chargers until 2022.
  • In 2023, he rejoined the Miami Dolphins as a pass game coordinator and defensive backs coach.

Personal Life

Renaldo Hill has an older brother named Ray Hill, who also played football at Michigan State and for the Miami Dolphins. They are one of a few sets of brothers who have played for the Dolphins.
