History of Rest Haven
How the Town Started
Rest Haven officially became a town in 1938. This means it was given a special document, called a municipal charter, that allowed it to govern itself.
Trying to Join Buford
In 2005, leaders in Rest Haven wanted the town to become part of Buford. Buford is a much larger city that almost completely surrounds Rest Haven. There was a similar attempt in 2001, but a judge decided that Rest Haven should remain its own city. Some property owners in Rest Haven had already left the town and joined Buford.
State law makes it tricky for one city to join another. First, the town would need to vote to officially close down. After that, the people who used to live in Rest Haven would need to vote again to join Buford. Buford's city council would also have to agree.
In 2015, some residents again asked to join Buford, and this time their request was approved. However, as of 2022, Rest Haven still exists as a city. The mayor is Kenneth Waycaster. Even though it's still a town, many of its services, like planning and utilities, are handled by Buford.
