Opening Day
The shopping center first opened its doors on 2 December 2004. It was part of a huge project called the Rhodes Waterside development. This project cost $1.2 billion and also included homes and office buildings. The Walker Corporation developed the center. They also built the Broadway Shopping Centre in Sydney.
What Was Here Before?
Before the shopping center was built, the land was home to a factory. This factory belonged to Berger Paints from 1916 to 1986. Later, another company called Orica operated there until 1987. The site then sat empty for many years and needed special cleaning before construction could begin.
Early Shops and Changes
When it first opened, Rhodes Shopping Centre had several major stores. These included IKEA, Coles, Bi-Lo, and Reading Cinemas.
In 2007, the company Mirvac bought the shopping center. Mirvac still owns and manages Rhodes Waterside today. After Mirvac took over, some stores changed. Bi-Lo closed down and was replaced by Target. Later, in 2021, Target left the center. Kmart then opened in its place that same year.
