Rhodhiss is a small town located in North Carolina, a state in the United States. It is unique because it sits across two different counties: Caldwell and Burke. In 2020, about 997 people lived there.

History of Rhodhiss

The town of Rhodhiss got its name from two important people: John M. Rhodes and George B. Hiss. They worked together to build a large cotton mill. This mill was located on the Catawba River in Caldwell County.

In 1902, the Rhodhiss Manufacturing Company opened. They built a special horseshoe-shaped dam, an electric generator, the mill itself, a general store, and homes for the workers. The town of Rhodhiss officially became a town in 1903.

Just a few years later, Rhodhiss grew even more. It expanded into Burke County. A new steel bridge was built over the Catawba River. This bridge helped connect the two parts of the town.

Rhodhiss and the Moon Landing

Did you know that Rhodhiss played a small part in history? The fabric used for the U.S. flag that astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin placed on the Moon in 1969 was made here! It was woven at the Burlington Mills Plant 2 in Rhodhiss. Glen Price, who lived in Rhodhiss his whole life, was the manager of the plant at that time.

Geography of Rhodhiss

Rhodhiss is located in the eastern part of Burke County and the southern part of Caldwell County. To its north, you'll find the town of Granite Falls.

The Catawba River flows right through the middle of Rhodhiss. The town is just downstream from the Rhodhiss Dam. There is one main bridge that crosses the river in town. This bridge connects the northern part of Rhodhiss (on Caldwell Street) with the southern part (on Burke Street).

Rhodhiss is a very quiet town. It has only one traffic light, which is a flashing yellow light to warn drivers. It also has a very low crime rate. In the 1980s, there was a beach on Strawberry Hill. There was also a Boy Scout club house nearby.

The town covers about 1.26 square miles (3.3 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, but about 0.07 square miles (0.19 square kilometers) is water, mainly from the Catawba River.
