Early Life and Learning
Riccardo Tisci was born in Taranto, Italy, and grew up in a town called Como. He loved art and design from a young age. After studying in Italy, he moved to London to attend the famous Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. He finished his studies there in 1999, ready to start his career in fashion.
His Fashion Journey
Starting Out in Fashion
After finishing college, Riccardo Tisci worked for several fashion companies. He gained experience at places like Puma and Ruffo Research. Ruffo Research is a company that helps new designers get started.
After his contract ended, Tisci spent some time in India. There, he started to create his very own fashion collection. In 2004, he showed his first collection, called the Riccardo Tisci Collection, during Milan Fashion Week. This was a big step for him.
Leading Givenchy (2005–2017)
In 2005, Riccardo Tisci became the creative director for Givenchy. This meant he was in charge of designing the brand's fancy haute couture (custom-made, high fashion) and ready-to-wear (off-the-rack clothes) collections, as well as accessories. The people at Givenchy thought he was a perfect fit because of his modern and romantic style.
His first collection for Givenchy was shown in Paris in July 2005. He also designed costumes for pop superstar Madonna's Sticky & Sweet Tour in 2008, which was a huge deal! He even designed another costume for her in 2009.
After 12 years, Riccardo Tisci decided to leave Givenchy in 2017. During his time there, Givenchy's sales grew a lot, showing how successful his designs were.
Leading Burberry (2018–2022)
In 2018, Riccardo Tisci moved to another famous British fashion brand, Burberry. He became their chief creative officer, taking over from Christopher Bailey. He even worked with another famous designer, Vivienne Westwood, for a special collection.
At Burberry, Tisci wanted to mix old traditions with new, modern ideas. He often added a touch of dark, gothic charm to his designs. He stayed at Burberry until September 2022, when another designer, Daniel Lee, took over his role.
His Unique Style
Riccardo Tisci is especially good at designing haute couture, which are unique, handmade outfits for special clients. He once said that when he started at Givenchy, they had only a few haute couture customers, but by the time he left, they had many more!
His fashion shows are also very special. He pays a lot of attention to how the space looks and feels. He describes his shows as "melancholic" and says he loves "romanticism and sensuality" in his designs. He even featured a new model named Lea T in his Givenchy Fall-Winter 2010 show.
