Richard Reynell (1519–1585) was an important English gentleman from East Ogwell, Devon. He served his country as a Member of Parliament (MP) and as the High Sheriff of Devon. He was known for being loyal to his rulers, fair in justice, and very welcoming to guests. He also made sure his five sons received excellent education and training.

Richard Reynell was born in 1519. His father was John Reynell of East Ogwell, and his mother was Margaret, the daughter of William Fortescue.

Richard Reynell's Life and Work

Richard Reynell served several English kings and queens during his lifetime. He was a Justice of the Peace for almost 40 years, helping to keep law and order. He also became the High Sheriff of Devon in 1585, which was a very important role in the county.

He was known for being a good person, strong in his beliefs, and very helpful to his rulers. He worked hard to stop bad behavior and support good people. He was also very generous, often hosting many guests.

Early Life and Travels

When he was young, during the time of King Henry VIII, Richard spent time at court. He also traveled a lot with important knights and gentlemen. They went to France, Flanders, and Italy. From there, they crossed the Adriatic Sea and traveled to Hungary and Greece. In these travels, he even fought against the Turks at the siege of Buda.

Military Service

Richard Reynell also served in several battles for King Henry VIII. He was at Bulloin when the king was there. He also fought at Laundersey and was part of the siege and burning of Treport in France.

Later, he helped put down the Western Rebellion against Edward VI. He was in charge of a group of horsemen and did very well. He was badly wounded during this time. Because of his bravery, King Edward VI rewarded him with land and a house near Plymouth.

His Sons and Legacy

Richard Reynell had five sons, and four of them became knights. He made sure all his sons received excellent education and training from a young age. They studied at universities, law schools, and even traveled to countries like Germany, France, and Italy.

Political Career

In 1559, Richard Reynell was elected to represent the town of Saltash in Parliament. He also bought more land, including the manor of West Ogwell, adding to his already large possessions.

Richard Reynell married Agnes Southcote. Her father, John Southcote, was also a Member of Parliament.

Richard and Agnes had several children, including:

  • Sir Thomas Reynell (1545–1621): He was the eldest son and inherited his father's estate.
  • Sir Richard Reynell (died 1633): He was the third son.
  • Sir Carew Reynell (died 1624): He was the fifth son and also became an MP.

Death and Burial

Richard Reynell died on July 29, 1585, while he was still serving as the High Sheriff of Devon. He was buried in East Ogwell Church, alongside his ancestors. His eldest son took over the family estate and rebuilt the manor house there.
