Richard Hayward (born February 6, 1946 – died August 12, 2010) was a super talented American drummer. He is most famous for being a founding member and the drummer for the band Little Feat. Richie also played with many other bands and worked as a "session player." This means he was hired to play drums for recordings or concerts without being a full-time member. He even had some small acting roles on TV, like in the show F Troop.
Richie Hayward's Music Career
Richie Hayward first started playing music in Southern California. Before he helped start Little Feat, he was part of two other groups. These bands were called The Fraternity of Man and then The Factory. While in The Factory, he met Lowell George, who would become the lead singer of Little Feat.
The Factory even appeared on a TV show! They played a band called the Bedbugs on an episode of the sitcom F Troop. This happened on February 9, 1967.
Playing with Other Artists
Besides his main work with Little Feat, Richie Hayward was a very busy musician. He recorded and performed with many famous artists. He played drums for people like Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, and Linda Ronstadt.
He also worked with Robert Plant, Paul Rodgers, and Stephen Stills. Richie's drumming skills were so good that many musicians wanted to work with him. He even appeared in a movie! He was part of a band in the 1978 film The Buddy Holly Story.
Richie Hayward's Passing
Richie Hayward passed away on August 12, 2010. He died from health problems related to liver cancer.
The day after he passed, his band Little Feat had a concert. They played at the Fairport's Cropredy Convention festival in Cropredy, UK. The band members were very sad to play without Richie. Paul Barrere, another member of Little Feat, started the concert by saying, "Let's Rock For Richie." This showed how much they missed their friend and bandmate.
