Richland Junction is a neighborhood located in Richland, a city in Benton County, Washington, United States. It is found within the eastern part of Richland city limits.
History of Richland Junction
How Richland Junction Started
Richland Junction was first known as Chemna. It was founded in 1900 by a person named Benjamin Rosencrance. He was a settler, which means he was one of the first people to move to and live in this new area.
Mr. Rosencrance bought land from the Northern Pacific Railway Company. He planned to use this land for the Benton Post Office.
Changing the Name
In 1905, the name of the area was changed from Chemna to Richland. This new name was chosen to honor Nelson Rich.
Nelson Rich was a state legislator from Prosser. A legislator is someone who helps make laws for a state. He was also a partner in an irrigation company. An irrigation company helps bring water to dry land for farming. Nelson Rich played a role in helping to establish the townsite.
