Richmondville is a town in Schoharie County, New York, United States. It's home to 2,466 people, based on the 2020 census. The town got its name from a post office that was located there.
The Town of Richmondville also includes a smaller area called the Village of Richmondville. This town is located on the western edge of Schoharie County, northeast of Oneonta.

History of Richmondville
Richmondville was first settled around 1764. The early settlers built their homes near what is now Warnerville.
Revolutionary War Battle
An important event during the American Revolution happened here. The "Battle of Cobleskill" was actually fought within the area that is now Richmondville.
Forming the Town
The town of Richmondville was officially created in 1849. It was formed from a part of the nearby town of Cobleskill. Later, in 1851, Richmondville grew by adding land from the town of Seward.
In 1881, the community of Richmondville became its own separate village. This meant it had its own local government, distinct from the larger town.
Education in Richmondville
For many years, Richmondville was a central place for education. It had a school that served several surrounding communities. This school, built in 1932, was first known as Richmondville Central School. It taught students from kindergarten all the way through 12th grade.
Today, this building is an elementary school. It is now called the JOSEPH B. RADEZ Elementary School. It was renamed to honor a principal who worked there for a long time. This school is part of the larger Cobleskill-Richmondville Central School District.
Geography of Richmondville
Richmondville covers about 30.2 square miles (78.3 square kilometers) of land. Only a very small part, about 0.04 square miles (0.1 square kilometers), is water.
Elevation and Roads
The land in Richmondville has different heights. The lowest points are around 920 feet (280 meters) near Cobleskill Creek. The highest points reach about 2,160 feet (658 meters) in the southeastern part of the town.
Interstate 88 runs through the town. Before this highway was built, New York State Route 10 was the main road going north and south into the Village of Richmondville. Now, Route 10 goes around the village to the east. It connects with New York State Route 7 at an interchange with Interstate 88. Part of Route 7 also runs alongside Route 10 in Richmondville.
The western edge of the town forms the border with Otsego County.

Based on the census from 2000, there were 2,412 people living in Richmondville. These people lived in 968 households, and 686 of those were families. The town had about 80 people per square mile (31.76 people per square kilometer).
About 32.3% of the households had children under 18 living there. Most households, 54.8%, were married couples living together. About 23.6% of all households were made up of people living alone.
The average age of people in the town was 37 years old. About 26% of the population was under 18. For every 100 females, there were about 103 males.
Communities and Locations in Richmondville
- Bear Gulch – This is a valley located south of the Village of Richmondville.
- Beards Hollow – A small community, or hamlet, found south of the Village of Richmondville. It's located in a valley with the same name, on County Road 23. You can reach Old Beards Hollow by taking Beards Hollow Road. This historic area still has a church standing. Beards Hollow Road connects to NYS Route 10 and NYS Route 7.
- Brooker Hollow – The Terpenning–Johnson House and Cemetery is located here. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2012.
- Richmondville – This is the main Village of Richmondville, located in the center of the town, near NY-10 and Interstate 88.
- Warnerville – A hamlet in the northeastern part of the town. It's on NY-10 and was named after one of the first families to settle there. It was also known as "Manns Valley."
- West Richmondville – Another hamlet located in the western part of the town. It's on NY-7, close to the Interstate. This area used to be called "Caryleville."
