Growing Up and Learning
Rie Rasmussen grew up in Denmark. She had a large family with eight brothers and sisters.
When she was 15, Rie was on a family vacation. She was in New York City. A person who finds models saw her there. Soon after, she moved from Denmark to New York.
Rie's first dream was to be an animator. She wanted to draw for Disney movies.
Later, she moved to California, United States. There, she went to the Hollywood Film Institute. This is a film school where she studied to be a writer and director. While at school, she met famous filmmakers Owen Wilson and Wes Anderson.
Her Film Work
Rie Rasmussen got her first acting role in Femme Fatale. The director, Brian De Palma, was very impressed by her. He had read short stories she wrote about her life. He also thought her way of walking was amazing.
After Femme Fatale, Rie had an idea for a film. She showed it to French director Luc Besson. At first, he said no. But later, he helped her make her first short film. It was called Thinning the Herd.
Thinning the Herd was shown at the 2004 Festival de Cannes. It was competing for a special award. The film was also chosen for over 20 other film festivals. This included the Quentin Tarantino Film Festival.
In the same year, Rie wrote and directed another short film. It was called Il Vestito. This film was shown at the Taormina Film Festival.
A year later, she got a main role in Luc Besson's movie Angel-A. This was her first time playing the main character in a big movie. Even though she played French women in her movies, Rie did not speak French. She spent three and a half months learning French for the film. Many French people were surprised she hadn't spoken the language for years.
In 2009, Rie Rasmussen made her first full-length movie. She wrote, directed, produced, and starred in it. The movie was called Human Zoo. It was based on the story of her adopted sister. Her sister was from Vietnam and was trying to become a citizen.
The movie takes place during a conflict in Kosovo. Rie plays a refugee living in Marseille. The film talks about problems with immigration. Human Zoo was chosen for the 2009 Berlin International Film Festival. It was also picked by Quentin Tarantino for its first showing in the US.
Fashion Career
Rie Rasmussen's role in Femme Fatale made people in fashion notice her. She became the face of Gucci for designer Tom Ford.
Her first big fashion job was modeling for Victoria’s Secret in 2001. She has also worked with other famous fashion brands. These include Donna Karan, Yves Saint Laurent, Dolce & Gabbana, and Fendi.
