Ringoes is the oldest known settlement in Hunterdon County. It grew up around a place called John Ringo's Tavern. This tavern was located on the Old York Road, which is now Route 179.

The tavern was an important meeting spot. Many meetings of the Hunterdon Chapter of the Sons of Liberty took place there. This group was formed in 1766, before the American Revolution.
