History of Rio: How It Started

Early Beginnings of Rio
The area was first planned out as "Rio St. Lucie" in 1893. That same year, a post office opened on March 24, but it was named "Rio San Lucie."
Changes to the Post Office Name
Later, on December 1, 1897, the post office name was made shorter to just "Rio." However, this post office closed down on March 15, 1902. Mail for the area then went through the post office in Goslingville. Goslingville was located on a narrow piece of land just north of where the Roosevelt Bridge is today.
Reopening and Final Change
The Rio post office reopened on April 6, 1904. It stayed open until October 15, 1927. After that, its services were moved to the post office in Jensen, which is now known as Jensen Beach.
