The River Fane starts in a lake called Lough Ross. This lake is right on the border between County Monaghan in the Republic of Ireland and County Armagh in Northern Ireland.

From Lough Ross, the river flows east. It travels through parts of County Monaghan, County Louth, and County Armagh. The Fane passes by towns like Inniskeen and Knockbridge. Finally, it reaches Dundalk Bay near Blackrock, County Louth, where it joins the Irish Sea.

The River Fane is about 61.56 kilometers (38.25 miles) long. It drains water from an area of 350 square kilometers (135 square miles). This means it collects water from a large amount of land around it.
