The River Yox is a cool river located in the English county of Suffolk. It starts its journey west of Peasenhall and flows through villages like Sibton and Yoxford. After Yoxford, it changes its name and becomes known as the Minsmere River. Long ago, people could walk across the River Yox at Yoxford because it was shallow enough. Today, a modern road bridge helps the busy A12 cross over the river.

About the River Yox

The River Yox is an important part of the Suffolk landscape. It helps shape the land around it and provides a home for many plants and animals.

Where Does it Flow?

The River Yox begins its path in the western part of Peasenhall. From there, it gently winds its way through the countryside. It passes through the village of Sibton, where the land is often used for farming. The river then reaches Yoxford, a village that even gets its name from the river ("Yox-ford" means a place where you can cross the Yox). After Yoxford, the river continues its journey but is then called the Minsmere River.

The River Valley

The area around the River Yox is called its valley. This valley is mostly flat and is used for growing grass, which is great for animals to graze on. Some parts near Sibton are also used for growing crops. You might even find some peat in the ground here, which is a type of soil made from old, decayed plants.

The river valley has a narrow floodplain, which is the flat land next to the river that can sometimes get flooded. This area often has "water meadows," which are special fields that can be flooded on purpose to help the grass grow. To keep the land from getting too wet, people have built many small ditches, called dykes, to help drain the water away.

Amazing Wildlife

The River Yox is a lively place, full of different creatures! It's like a natural playground for many animals.

Fish and Amphibians

In 2018, people saw several types of fish and amphibians living in the river near Yoxford. These included small stickleback fish and even brown trout, which are a type of fish that likes clear, cool water. You could also spot frogs and newts, which are amphibians that live both in water and on land. In 2017, eels were also seen swimming in the river.

Reptiles and Mammals

The river is also home to some interesting reptiles and mammals. Grass snakes, which are harmless snakes that love water, have been seen here. Best of all, otters, playful mammals that are excellent swimmers, have also made the River Yox their home!

What About Water Voles and Kingfishers?

For a while, there were concerns about some animals. Kingfishers, beautiful birds with bright blue and orange feathers, were not seen after 2017. Also, water voles, which are small, furry creatures that look a bit like large mice and live by the water, had a big population along the river. However, people noticed that pet cats were sometimes catching them, which caused their numbers to drop.

But don't worry! Good news arrived in 2020. Both water voles and kingfishers have been regularly seen again on a part of the river that flows behind Yoxford High Street. This means the river is still a great habitat for these wonderful creatures!
