Robert S. Bevier was an American military officer who lived from 1834 to 1889. He was a colonel from Missouri who fought with the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. Bevier was also a lawyer and helped start a town named after him in Missouri.

Early Life and Missouri Beginnings

Robert S. Bevier was born on April 28, 1834, in a place called Painted Post, New York. Before the Civil War, he was involved in a conflict known as the Wakarusa War in 1855. This was a fight against a group called Jayhawkers in Kansas.

In 1858, Bevier started his own law business in Macon, Missouri. He also helped create a new town in 1858, which was named Bevier, Missouri, in his honor.

Fighting in the Civil War

When the American Civil War began, Robert Bevier joined the Confederate side. In 1861, he became part of the Missouri State Guard. He was chosen to be a Colonel, leading the 4th Regiment of the 3rd Division.

Important Battles and Commands

Bevier played a part in several major battles.

  • Battle of Pea Ridge: From March 6 to 8, 1862, Bevier was in charge of a group called Bevier's Missouri Infantry Battalion. They fought alongside the Missouri State Guard on the left side of the Confederate forces at the Battle of Pea Ridge.
  • Forming the 5th Regiment: By September 1, 1862, Bevier was a Colonel leading a small group of four companies. This group, along with another led by James McCown, formed the 5th Regiment of Missouri Infantry. This regiment later grew to full size. McCown became the Colonel, and Bevier served as his lieutenant.

Continuous Combat

Bevier's regiment was almost always fighting during the war.

  • Iuka-Corinth Campaign: They fought in the Battle of Iuka on September 19, 1862, and in the Second Battle of Corinth on October 3–4, 1862.
  • Vicksburg Campaign: The regiment also took part in the Vicksburg Campaign. They were captured when the city of Vicksburg fell during the Siege of Vicksburg.
  • Consolidated Regiment: Even after being captured, many soldiers were released on a promise not to fight again for a time. These soldiers then formed a new group called the consolidated 3rd and 5th Regiment. Robert Bevier was one of the two Lieutenant Colonels in this new group, which continued fighting until the war ended.

After the War

After the Civil War, Robert Bevier wrote a book about his experiences. It was called A History of the First and Second Missouri Confederate Brigades and was published in 1879. He passed away on February 24, 1889, in Owensboro, Kentucky.
