Robert Earl Holmes (born October 5, 1945 – died April 14, 2018) was an American football player. He was a running back, which is a player who runs with the ball. Robert played for several teams during his career. These included the Kansas City Chiefs, Houston Oilers, and San Diego Chargers.

He was a champion, winning the Super Bowl with the Chiefs. Robert also played in the Canadian Football League (CFL) for the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Robert Holmes's Early Life

Robert Holmes was born in Huntsville, Texas, in 1945. He grew up loving football. He played high school football at Huntsville (TX) Sam Houston.

After high school, he went to Southern University. There, he played college football for the Southern Jaguars team. His skills on the field helped him get noticed by professional teams.

Professional Football Career

Robert Holmes began his professional career in 1968. He was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs. At that time, the Chiefs were part of the American Football League (AFL). The AFL was a major football league before it joined with the National Football League (NFL).

Playing for the Chiefs

Robert played for the Chiefs from 1968 to 1971. He was a key player for them. In 1969, he was chosen as an AFL All-Star. This means he was one of the best players in the league that year.

AFL and Super Bowl Champion

The 1969 season was very special for Robert and the Chiefs. They won the AFL Championship Game. They beat the Oakland Raiders in that game.

Then, they went on to play in Super Bowl IV. This was a huge game between the AFL champions and the NFL champions. The Chiefs played against the Minnesota Vikings and won! Robert Holmes became a Super Bowl Champion.

Moving to Other Teams

After his time with the Chiefs, Robert played for other teams. In 1971, he joined the Houston Oilers. He played for them for two seasons.

In 1973, he moved to the San Diego Chargers. He played one season there. Later, he also played for the Portland Storm and returned to the Houston Oilers in 1975.

Playing in Canada

In 1976, Robert Holmes went to Canada. He joined the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the Canadian Football League (CFL). He played five regular season games and also played in the Western Final.

After his football career, Robert returned to live in Regina, Canada. He passed away on April 14, 2018.
