Robert Jordan was the pen name of an American fantasy writer named James Oliver Rigney Jr. He was born on October 17, 1948, and passed away on September 16, 2007. Robert Jordan is best known for his very popular and long fantasy book series, The Wheel of Time. He sadly died from a serious illness before he could finish the series. Another fantasy writer, Brandon Sanderson, helped complete the last book, A Memory of Light, which was released in three parts.

Robert Jordan's Early Life

Robert Jordan was born in Charleston, South Carolina. He joined the United States Army and served in the Vietnam War from 1968 to 1970. He worked as a helicopter gunner. For his bravery, he received several important awards. These included the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Bronze Star.

After his time in Vietnam, he went to The Citadel, a military college. He earned a degree in physics. Later, he worked for the United States Navy as a nuclear engineer. He started writing his own stories in 1977.

About The Wheel of Time Series

The Wheel of Time is a huge fantasy book series. It tells the story of a young man named Rand al'Thor. He is destined to become the Dragon Reborn. This means he is a special hero who will save the world.

The Dragon Reborn is prophesied to lead the good forces, called the Light. They must fight against the Dark One, who is the main bad guy. This big battle is known as the Last Battle.

Robert Jordan's Personal Life

Robert Jordan loved history very much. He also enjoyed many hobbies. These included hunting, fishing, sailing, and playing poker, chess, and pool. He also collected pipes.

He was a member of the Episcopal Church. He lived with his wife, Harriet McDougal, in a house built in 1797. Harriet is a book editor and also worked as Robert Jordan's editor.
