Robert Lee Massey, born on February 17, 1966, is a well-known American football coach and a former professional player. Since 2019, he has been the head football coach for Winston-Salem State University.
The New Orleans Saints picked him in the second round of the 1989 NFL draft in 1989. He played as a cornerback in the National Football League (NFL) for five different teams from 1989 to 1997. Famous Pro Football Hall of Fame player Michael Irvin once said that Massey was the toughest cornerback he ever played against.
Massey was chosen for the Pro Bowl in 1992, which is a special game for the best players. He played college football at North Carolina Central University in Durham, North Carolina. He also worked as a head football coach for Livingstone College from 2005 to 2006. Later, he coached for Shaw University from 2012 to 2015.

Playing in the NFL
Robert Massey started his professional football career after being drafted by the New Orleans Saints. He played for them for two years. After that, he joined the Phoenix Cardinals and played there for three seasons.
He then moved to the Detroit Lions for two years. Later, he played for the Jacksonville Jaguars for one season. His last team in the NFL was the New York Giants, where he played in 1997.
During his time as a player, Massey was known for his strong defense. He made 432 tackles, which means he stopped the opposing team's players many times. He also had 14 interceptions, where he caught the ball thrown by the other team's quarterback. He recovered 5 fumbles too.
Becoming a Coach
After his playing career, Robert Massey started coaching. He began as an assistant coach for the New York Giants in 1998. He helped coach the defensive backs, who are players like cornerbacks and safeties.
He then coached at Hillside High School from 2001 to 2002. In 2003, he returned to his college, North Carolina Central University, as a wide receivers coach. The next year, he coached defensive backs there.
Massey became an interim head coach for Livingstone College in 2005 and 2006. An interim coach is someone who takes over temporarily. From 2007 to 2009, he was a defensive backs coach for Shaw University. He then became their defensive coordinator from 2010 to 2011, which means he was in charge of the team's defense.
From 2010 to 2015, Robert Massey was the head coach for Shaw University. After that, he joined Winston-Salem State University in 2016. He worked as an associate head coach, defensive backs coach, and special teams coordinator until 2018. Since 2019, he has been the head football coach for Winston-Salem State.
