Sir Robert Strickland (born 1600, died 1671) was an important English landowner and politician. He lived at Sizergh Castle in England. He was a Member of Parliament and supported King Charles I during a big conflict known as the Wars of the Three Kingdoms.

About Robert Strickland

Robert Strickland was the oldest son of Sir Thomas Strickland, who also lived at Sizergh Castle in Helsington, Cumbria. His mother was Margaret Curwen. Robert studied at Trinity College, Cambridge University starting in 1615.

In 1624, he was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP) for the area of Westmorland. An MP is someone elected to represent their area in the country's government, helping to make laws.

In 1638, Robert Strickland became a colonel, which is a high-ranking officer in the army. He was given this role by Thomas Wentworth, who was in charge of Yorkshire for King Charles I. Robert was asked to lead 900 local soldiers (militia) during a conflict called the Bishops' War.

Later, in 1640, the King asked him to create a whole new army group, called a regiment. Robert had to get the soldiers ready and march them to Newcastle-upon-Tyne. During the English Civil War, a major conflict in England, he was given another job: to lead a group of horse soldiers, known as cavalry. It's believed he paid for much of this group himself.

At a famous battle called Edgehill, Robert Strickland led the cavalry. His son, Sir Thomas Strickland, led the foot soldiers (infantry) in the same battle.

Robert Strickland lived to see King Charles II return to the throne in 1660, an event known as the Restoration. The year after the King returned, Robert was made a Deputy Lieutenant for the North Riding of Yorkshire. This meant he helped the main leader of the county. He passed away in 1671, and his oldest son, Sir Thomas Strickland, took over Sizergh Castle.

Robert's Family

Robert Strickland married Margaret Alford. She was one of three daughters of Sir William Alford. Robert and Margaret had several children. Their oldest son was Sir Thomas Strickland. They also had another son named Walter Strickland.

They had two daughters:

  • Dorothy, who married William Grimstone.
  • Theresa, who married John Stafford-Howard.

In 1646, a special agreement was made for the marriage of Robert's oldest son, Thomas. Thomas married Jane Moseley. Jane was the daughter of Thomas Moseley and had been married before. Thomas and Jane had two daughters who lived. Jane passed away before 1675. Later, Thomas married again to Winifred Trentham, and they had four sons together.
